President Wilford Woodruff, the 3rd president of the LDS church said:
"The Lord will never permit me or any other man who stands as President of this Church to lead you astray. It is not in the programme. It is not in the mind of God. If I were to attempt that, the Lord would remove me out of my place, and so He will any other man who attempts to lead the children of men astray from the oracles of God and from their duty." He stated: "Inasmuch as laws have been enacted by Congress forbidding plural marriages, which laws have been pronounced constitutional by the court of last resort, I hereby declare my intention to submit to those laws, and to use my influence with the members of the Church over which I preside to have them do likewise." He said this on October 6, 1890.
The Article of Faith 12 states: "We believe in being subject to kings, presidents, rulers, and magistrates, in obeying, honoring, and sustaining the law."
I know that Joseph Smith and those who followed after him as presidents of the church were true men of God. Today, Thomas S. Monson is the president of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and I know him also to be called of God. He said to the Latter-day Saints: "My beloved brothers and sisters, may we make whatever sacrifices are necessary to attend the temple, and to have the spirit of the temple in our hearts and in our homes. May we follow in the footsteps of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, who made the ultimate sacrifice for us, that we might have eternal life and exaltation in our Heavenly Father's kingdom."
